Holy Is His Name

Mary is underrated in Protestant theology and overrated in Catholic theology. She is the type of a perfect Christian. This passage is her song of triumph and in this song one is brought close to Mary’s heart. Mary has been called as God’s servant. Her self-will is dead and she accepts God’s authority over every part of her life. In the eyes of the Jewish people around her Mary had broken sacred marriage vows. She was a virgin and was pregnant with a baby that was not Joseph’s. She knew certain death would follow but she was still willing. She knew there would be pain, ridicule, and slander but she rejoiced because her joy was from within, not from any other source in the world. She is the example of a Christian who gives everything over to the Lord. Mary also realized that she needed a Savior. She was humble and contrite. Mary also stresses mercy in her song. This is what is in those who are penitent, they cry out to God from a sorrowful heart. The mercy of God is on those who fear Him from generation to generation. The core of God’s nature is holiness. What God does in Mary He will do in all of those who come to Him in repentance and faith. The incarnation is a type of the new birth and takes place in all those who cry to God for mercy. God deals with humans through His providence. He draws people to Himself. Pride will lead people away from God, but humility brings people to God. Only God can save, rescue, and heal! This promise is to all who by faith are the seeds of Abraham. The seed of Abraham is to love God and do what He commands out of love. Mary was held by her love for God. She did not find it burdensome to live for God. Mary lived as God had spoken to her.
