What Are You Doing Here?

Elijah the prophets name means “my God is Jehovah” and he was sent to win back the hearts of the Hebrews during the reign of the King Ahab and his wicked wife Jezebel. There was a vast, invisible, spiritual battle going on for the soul of Israel and in the soul of Elijah. Even the prophet’s dedication to God is being challenged. The Holy Spirit does not keep us from trials but gives us the power to overcome the trials when they come! God has become an enemy of Ahab and Jezebel because they refused to repent and surrender their wicked lifestyle. The same call to repent goes out to all the world today. Christ overcame evil through the cross and He sent the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin, but repentance must be the response to conviction. Ahab and Jezebel are a type of those who refuse to repent and willingly surrender to the grace of God. Elijah is a type of what the Christian Church should be. Elijah, like the Church, was influenced by fears, trials, and encouragement. But Elijah was in the world but not of the world! Elijah had the same nature as all do but he repented and remained surrendered to God. He exercised discipline and remained in the will of God. Every person who follows Christ will suffer, the cross is for death! Elijah loved God, he hated what God hates, and loved what God loves. Elijah walked in awareness of God’s presence. He walked with God as his worldview and sought perfect love for God. He was restless for God and pursued Him with passion! Elijah ate the spiritual manna from Heaven. The prophet made a final commitment to serve God alone. May the Church of Jesus Christ rise up as an Elijah to this generation!
