That They May Be Perfect In One
In these verses Jesus speaks of something that has taken place in the lives of the disciples that has never taken place before up to this point in history. What the disciples had become would classify what a Christian would be for all time. The disciples had received the Word, they had believed in His Name, experienced a change as a result of their faith, and they knew God. Christians both initially and continually go through the trials of Christ and as they continue to receive, know, and believe, they are sanctified. Christ came to restore in mankind the image of God so that they all may become one. God changes a believer as they walk by faith. True faith draws believers out of the world, it brings about a new birth, leads to death of self, and separation from the world. One who keeps the commands of God comes out of the world. The biggest battle for the Christian is to keep on following Christ as the old person is being replaced by the new. The road is narrow and one must beware of apostasy. Satan still kills, steals, and destroys if one comes off of the narrow path and onto the broad way. Only those who follow Christ are regaining the glory that was lost in the Garden of Eden. Only those who are living His Word every day and are being sanctified. Christ’s disciples could only receive so much at a time. True holiness goes beyond boldness and sincerity. The Word of Christ must become our very life, to take the very life of Christ and live it out. Christians must keep on doing and living out the teachings of Christ. Sanctification takes place as Christians continue in His trials and only the Holy Spirit could give the strength needed to continue on the narrow way.
