Break Up Your Fallow Ground

Jeremiah lived and preached during the 6th century BC. His message was to a people who had previously said that they would obey God but they were not living in obedience. Israel had been given everything they needed to be holy, pure, and blessed. They were called to be an example of the righteousness of God. They were called to enter into a covenant with God based on repentance. Many false prophets were preaching that they did not have to obey God any longer. Jeremiah did not preach the message of the false prophets but the truth that one must obey in order to be blessed. Israel failed at this and God turned away from Israel because they had turned away from Him and did not keep His commandments. The message is still true for the modern Church and the call to repentance is still the same. Israel had trusted in pride instead of providence. They emphasized their own success and thought they were able to go on without God as Eve did in the Garden of Eden. It was for this reason that God sent Jeremiah to the people of Israel, to call them to trust in God and not in self. Jeremiah faithfully preached the Word of God but the people trusted in idols and self. Our faith must not rest in blessings, health, and wealth. Our faithfulness to God will be tested through trials. When faced with trials Christians are called to put God first and continue to trust in Him and not to worry. Trials show the state of the heart and God sanctifies Christians through trials. Faith must prevail over worry. Faith is ongoing belief in spite of circumstances but worry is trusting in self. If one lives what God commands and walks by faith they will walk in victory.
