Is Christ Able to Keep Me?
This chapter of the Gospel of John is towards the end of the Upper Room Discourse. Here Jesus is speaking to His disciples so they do not stumble as they are about to face persecution and trials. Jesus also promises them the help of the Holy Spirit. He knows that if Christians are left to themselves they will fall away and perish, and the Holy Spirit is given to keep one from falling away. The soul of mankind was earthly until the Holy Spirit is birthed within, without the Holy Spirit one is carnal. God desires to keep those who are His by the Holy Spirit, if not one will fall back into old habits and become a natural man. A natural man is one who walks in the natural when God desires that we walk in the Spirit. One who walks in the Spirit is not dictated to by outward situations, they are dictate to by the Holy Spirit. This is the way that we may be kept from stumbling. The carnal man walks in feelings, appetites, and spontaneity. The spiritual man walks in victory through the power of the Holy Spirit. The joy of the Christian comes when they know God through the indwelling Holy Spirit trusting that Christ is able to keep them. To the Children of Israel religion became all about the outward and they fell into despair, Jesus does not want His disciples to fall into the same trap. It is more than religion, it is about knowing Christ is able to keep them. Jesus taught His disciples to be expectant, not emotional. Expectancy is based on faith and hope, it is not based on emotion. Christ-like expectancy is knowing God will take care of all things, and knowing that God is able to keep you. Do you believe Christ is able to keep you?
