Deceit of the Heart

The prophet Jeremiah knew well the state of the human heart. He preached for 40 years but never saw revival in the people of Judah. In fact the people became bolder in their sin during his ministry. He preached to a people caught up in deep seeded lies as God was preparing to pour out His judgment upon them. The hearts of the people of Judah were corrupted, they held fast to deceit and had become corrupted in their own minds and worshipped idols. Yet at the same time the people had false security and believed they had nothing to fear. They heard the word of the Lord spoken through the prophet and they continued to disobey. They were wise in their own eyes, hypocrites, with no wisdom. If the human heart remains unchanged by God it will lead people astray every time. The deception of the human heart is beyond anyone, it cannot be changed without divine grace. Left to ourselves we cannot make the right decisions, for the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. All are guilty, sick, corrupted, and diseased. Christ is the only hope to set us free from the depravity of our own hearts! Until a person repents they will remain in bondage, sin is an endless cycle unless it is broken. Only those who are regenerated and walking by faith are those who are not under the deception of their own hearts. Many people try to hide their sin with religion, but sin goes so deep no one can hide it! Anyone who trusts in anything other than God is a hypocrite. We must see how deeply engraved the sin is within the human heart before realizing we are in need of Christ. Our hearts are wicked and left to themselves they will destroy us and bring us to hell, Jesus Christ is our only hope.
