The Breach of Promise
Israel had already broken God’s command ten times at this point in the story, they had a divided heart and God was ready to put them away. They had broken the terms of the covenant. They were no longer living a separated life. Unbelief and discouragement were spreading amongst them, they were becoming self-sympathetic and critical of their leaders. Without faith they were gripped by fear. False religion doesn’t establish lasting faith in God and it only understands Him on a surface level. Faith and obedience is the result of God living inside of a person. The first generation of the Hebrews did not enter the Promised Land because they did not consistently trust and obey God, and neither will we unless we do so. There was a breach in the promise and the hearts of many had turned back to Egypt. Their trials disrupted their faith, they saw the problem as bigger than their God. They abandoned all hope of being saved and refused to go any further. But rebellion can be turned into regeneration with a step of faith. Consecration repairs the breach in the promise. God is ready to pardon and is gracious and merciful. Receiving the promise is based on loyalty, faithfulness, and devotion to God. We must be willing to put everything we love upon the altar and not put ourselves before God. Caleb and Joshua are a type of the truly born again Christian, putting what God says first and being willing to trust Him by faith even in the midst of trials. Without God we can do nothing, with God we can be victorious in all things. The Church is being defeated amongst their enemies because the breach has not been repaired. Will you repair the breach and practice living by faith in God?
