You Will Know Him In the Breaking of Bread

This sermon focuses on the story of Jesus finding Luke and Cleopas on the Road to Emmaus leaving Jerusalem after His crucifixion and resurrection. Both Luke and Cleopas were Greeks. Luke was a proselyte to Judaism and his desire for Truth had led him to become a follower of Christ. But now he was going the wrong way. Christ had commanded all the disciples to not leave the city of Jerusalem but now they were leaving the city. This meeting of Christ on the road would be a turning point for Luke, after this he would set his hand to the plow and never look back from his decision to follow Christ. He would even accompany Paul on his missionary journeys and suffer much for the cause of the Gospel. But on this Emmaus Road he would be confronted with the choice of whether he would continue to follow Christ or walk away. Upon meeting Christ on the Emmaus Road Luke could not fully see Christ; he was restrained from seeing Him. This is because they had expected Him to be dead and they did not yet have the faith to see Him. Only those who have faith will see Christ, the spark of the Holy Spirit must be fanned into flame or it will go out. Today the modern Church has more available to it than ever before in history, but yet the Church is moving far away from God. This is because the Church at large lacks faith and no longer applies all that they hear and learn. The Church has become foolish and Satan has worked to capture the attention of the people and has drawn them away from God. Like Luke, the Church at large is going away from what Christ commands. We must be aware that we are not slow in our obedience to Christ. May we like Luke see Christ in the breaking of bread!
