How Much Do I Need God?

Not all who hear the Gospel are saved. Some begin on the way and then turn away. In order to be saved one must go from destitution to dependence on God. This is true repentance. Some make themselves and idol and are convinced, like Eve, that they don’t need God. The temptation Eve faced in the garden was to go on without God. When Eve ate the apple she decided that she didn’t need God. She severed herself from the Vine and purposely ignored the Lord’s command, losing unity with Him and sin entered the world. God became angry and both Adam and Eve lost divine favor, they were stripped of all honor and joy they once had. They tried to cover their idolatry and hide their shame with the fig leaves of religion. To give honor to something else above God is idolatry. We must be aware of and admit our destitution; Christ did not come for those who are well or righteous, but for those who know they need God. Idols lead us astray and influence us to turn away from God. If anyone is aware of their need of salvation they must come to Christ. The religious rulers of the time of Christ did not believe in Him because they worshipped the Law and the Temple. Christ came to disturb our spiritual system and reveal our deepest secrets. God will not allow any sin to remain within us. We must not hide behind a religious system, but our destitution must lead us to dependence and devotion upon God. We must be aware of how we come up short and thirst for God. The modern Church has become more and more idolatrous, relying on religion. Our destitution must lead us to dependence on God by faith. This is the only way one can be saved.
