The Sons of the Prophets Must Become Prophets Themselves
Elisha saw Elijah for the last time in this story. He would no longer see him as his spiritual father, but as his successor. No longer would Elijah be his guide, now Elisha’s own faith would be his guide. This story is similar to when Moses passed on and Joshua took over. It is now time for Elisha to live out his own faith, no longer would there be a teacher, and he must now live by faith alone. This same process must take place in every maturing believer. The Jordan River in this story represents a threshold into the fullness of the blessing. Overcoming the faithlessness that keeps us back. When you live by faith alone and obey Christ you cross the Jordan. You leave behind your old ways, your faithless ways. You leave a place of comfort knowing that God is going to be with you. A person can only be taught God’s Word to a certain point, they also must live it. The Holy Spirit continues to teach even after your Elijah is gone. You must embrace Christ as the source of peace. We muster personally believe that God is true and cross over the Jordan. Christians must see God as the Truth and live out their faith. The Spirit of God did not leave Elisha although Elijah left him. Elisha’s state did not change although his situation changed. Elisha had matured into a prophet himself. None can remain spiritual babes! We must all go on to maturity. The sons of the prophets must become prophets themselves. True prophets are slandered and treated as hypocrites. Every true believer must experience these trials but stay to God and not turn back to the natural when facing trial. We must not stop following Christ. God gives His Spirit in greater measure as we obey Him.
